Iranian authorities demand halt to protests

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iranian hardline authorities ordered their opponents on Thursday to cease anti-government protests and denied an opposition website report that troops were heading for Tehran ahead of a planned opposition rally.

The authorities have signaled they will tolerate no more protests after eight people were killed in fiery demonstrations on Sunday during the Shi’ite ritual of Ashura. A nephew of opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi was killed the same day.

State television showed a group of pro-government demonstrators wearing white shrouds and carrying placards that read: “We are ready to sacrifice our lives for the leader” — referring to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Jaras opposition website said troops and armored vehicles were moving toward Tehran and that security forces had deployed in several city squares to foil the opposition rally.

Troops moving to Tehran - reports

An Iranian opposition website today said the government was moving troops and armoured military vehicles to the capital on the day supporters of opposition leader Mir-Hossein Mousavi planned to hold a rally.

‘Hundreds of military forces and tens of armoured vehicles … are moving towards Tehran. Some of the vehicles are used for suppressing street riots,’ the Jaras website said.

The report could not be confirmed independently.

Jaras also said security forces had a heavy presence in various Tehran squares ahead of the planned opposition rally.

Iran’s police chief warned supporters of Mr Mousavi of harsh treatment if they joined illegal anti-government rallies.

In Iran’s bloodiest unrest since the aftermath of the disputed 12 June presidential election, eight people were killed on Sunday and at least 20 pro-reform figures, including three senior advisers to Mr Mousavi, were arrested.

Tehran leaders lose touch but protesters lack organisation #iranelection

Tehran leaders lose touch but protesters lack organisation

PARIS: Iran’s regime has lost touch with the aspirations of its people but it is still far from certain that the opposition protest movement is ready to seize power, experts say.

The street battles that rocked Tehran and other major cities over the Ashura holiday show the demonstrations have entered a new phase, with increased state repression and more violent incidents.

But unlike the 1979 revolution that overthrew the shah, Iran’s latest uprising is not led by a well-organised opposition in exile.

The largely spontaneous protest movement does not appear poised to take over. Former Iranian legislator Ahmad Salamatian said the civic revolt was “not organised and non-hierarchical” and warned that “it should not fall into the trap of violence, because it’s not clear that the middle classes would follow”.

Protester prepares for death before every rally #iranelection #cn4iran #iran #Tehran

Whenever Mina, a 36-year-old Iranian, joins a protest against the regime she carries a piece of paper with her name and phone number so her body can be identified if she is killed.

Thousands have been arrested and many tortured since Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad was re-elected president in June, but Mina says proudly that she has missed hardly any demonstrations. At least eight people were killed during protests on Sunday.

“My motivation is further strengthened every time I go to a rally, and each time I feel more amazed at how brave others are,” says Mina, a researcher with a masters degree. “We have to achieve our goals and there is no way backward.”

Since the protests began, the opposition Green Movement has become more radical, with some of its supporters challenging the pillars of the Islamic republic. “I still would say the majority of protesters don’t want to overthrow the regime but the regime itself is pushing us toward that direction by ignoring us,” she says.

Iran regime drums up its own crowds to oppose Green Movement

On Wednesday, the Islamic Republic of Iran organized national demonstrations and struck out at reformist supporters of the Green Movement. On Sunday, protests against the government turned violent, killing at least 37 people during the key religious holiday of Ashura.

On Wednesday, the Islamic Republic of Iran reacted to last Sunday’s violent demonstrations by marshaling supporters in countrywide demonstrations and launching a media offensive against the opposition Green Movement.

At least 37 people were killed Sunday on the deadliest day of rioting since June’s disputed presidential election, which saw hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad returned to office amid widespread elections of fraud. For the first time, demonstrators switched from nonviolent tactics to engage the police with stones and batons. In response, the police fired tear-gas and bullets.

Dissident Iran Rises #iranelection

Mike says:

One man wrote: “We demand the immediate release of all freedom fighters in Iran. Blessed be all the freedom lions of Iran—down with the murderous tyrants.” A woman wrote: “Heshmat Tabarzadi, the tireless freedom fighter, was arrested along with other activists following yesterday’s events. . . . We demand their release.”

Dissident Iran Rises

Among the dissidents arrested was veteran democratic activist Heshmat Tabarzadi. On December 17, Mr. Tabarzadi wrote in an op-ed article on these pages that “If the government continues to opt for violence, there very well may be another revolution in Iran. One side has to step down. And that side is the government—not the people.”

There are many others. Among the most significant are former foreign minister Ebrahim Yazdi, the secretary general of the outlawed Freedom Movement of Iran. During June’s protests, the 78-year-old cancer survivor was arrested by security forces directly from the hospital in Tehran where he was undergoing treatment. This time, they’ve reportedly rounded up his niece as well.

Prominent human-rights activist Emad Baghi was among those taken. This year, Mr. Baghi received the Martin Ennals Award—the Nobel Prize for human rights—and was banned from traveling to receive it in person.

Govt losing supporters, admits Supreme Leader Khamenei #ranelection #iran

Govt losing supporters, admits Khamenei

In a surprising admission, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday that the country’s rulers have lost some supporters since the disputed presidential election in June.

Still, he blamed the pro-reform opposition leaders for Iran’s problems. “The reality in the society is that as some (supporters) dropped out, twice that number joined (us),” he said.

Tens of thousands of hard-line government supporters turned out for state-sponsored rallies on Wednesday, some of them calling for the execution of opposition leaders.

Pro-government rallies were staged in Shiraz, Arak, Qom and Tehran, among other cities. Demonstrators at a rally in Tehran chanted “Death to Moussavi,” a reference to opposition leader Mir Hussein Moussavi. The government gave all employees a day off to attend the rallies and organised buses to transport schoolchildren and supporters from outlying rural areas to the protests.

BREAKING NEWS : Frightened Islamic regime detains Mousavi and Karubi, claiming they fled #iranelection #iran

Amplifyd from planet-iran.com
Mousavi and Karubi at Grand Ayatollah Montazeri's wake.

The Islamic regime-run news agency, Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) has reported that due to ‘increasing anger and demand for punishment’ of the two leaders of the Green movement, they have fled.

The Green Way Movement (Jaras) however reports that the two were picked up by the revolutionary guards and the Ministry of Intelligence and Security to the village of Kelar-Abad, in the Caspian region of Iran ‘in order to protect them’.

Parleman News however interviewed Karubi’s son, Hossein who stated that his father remains in Tehran and continues to deal with the daily issues facing the people of Iran. He added: “These claims are hallucinations emanating from the minds of those who know that they will never get their way and have to resort to spreading rumors that would mold well to their wishes. People who flee are criminals, not someone like my father who has a strong background and today both my father and Mr. Mousavi are with the people of Iran who have seen so much cruelty.”

Earth To Iran! #iranelection

Earth To Iran!

Ever since Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected last June the world has witnessed spontaneous protests by everyday Iranians against the regime, and now a website is asking for internet users around the world to post a video message of support to the Iranian protesters on its You Tube channel.

The website is called Planet Iran (http://www.planet-iran.com), its
Iranian-American founder Banafsheh Zand-Bonazzi says she got the idea after being asked by people how they can help to do their bit for the “freedom fighters” in Iran.

Banafsheh Zand-Bonazzi whose father is a renowned Iranian Journalist and has been in and out of Iranian prisons for his dissident action says the YouTube channel will annoy the regime greatly. She says the site is a “perpetual demonstration with indelible faces, voices, nationalities, accents and each and every voice is being heard at no risk.”

NICOSIA: The two senior leaders of Iran’s political opposition, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, have fled Tehran, state news agency IRNA said on Wednesday, while a website said they were in custody for their own protection.

“Two of the chiefs of the sedition left Tehran for the north of Iran after learning that the population was increasingly angry and demanding their punishment,” IRNA said.

Opposition website Rahesabz said “members of the Revolutionary Guards and the intelligence ministry picked up Mousavi and Karroubi in the city of Kelar-Abad to protect them from the anger of the people.”
